It must be so hard to have to say goodbye to them for such a long time. Still, I think what you're feeling this time around is totally normal. You have a lot on your plate and want to get to it. Hopefully you all will find a way to have some special moments these last few days and then everything will go very smoothly (and cheaper) than you hope.

Eh, I know a lot of adults that wouldn't "get" the political references in a movie. I had a roommate in college who couldn't understand why you can buy Cuban cigars in Canada and not the US. :P And maybe most kids wouldn't get the references, at least not younger ones. Your kids are pretty intelligent for their age. Most sixth graders aren't reading Vonnegut. (When I was in sixth grade, I fell in love with Shakespeare. I read MacBeth at least ten times that year.)

I think parents should use common sense with movies, but not get too caught up with censorship. Sometimes a movie with "bad" things can be good, because it can promote dialog. I watched a lot of things I probably shouldn't have as a kid, but I don't think it warped me or stole my innocence.

Good luck! I believe the IKEA in my area rents out vehicles to get your couch home. Either that or they deliver. I'm certain I saw something about that last time I was there and I was thinking how good that is because I always go to IKEA and check their slightly damaged room. I can't tell you how often I've been tempted to bring home something HUGE (i.e., already assembled) and haven't because I wasn't sure how. I remember reading about their new service and thinking, "Ha, now I have no excuse!"

I think there is a big difference in remembering emotional abuse, and remembering the times you didn't get to do stuff you wanted to do. All kids resent their parents at some point. If the chorus isn't "you aren't my father!" then the chorus is "you can't tell me what to do!" I wouldn't analyze it too much. They obviously have a good connection with their stepfather, and he seems to have stepped into that role enthusiastically. It will never be easy, but he seems to be doing a great job.

It's amazing how the end of even toxic friendships can be painful, isn't it? I can't imagine how much more difficult it would be to factor in your daughter's feelings, as well, and all of the maternal protectiveness that goes along with it. (I am going to be there in 9 years, wait for it.) Thanks so much for this post - it really does help me think about how I'll want to try to deal with this sort of thing (you can avoid other kids in schools - awesome!).

Good luck with detente at soccer!

It's tough to lose friends and move on, but sometimes you just can't work things out, and you can only take so much abuse. This woman sounds like one of those people who expects you to do everything she wants, and is mad at you if you don't, but never reciprocates. And it sounds like her daughter has learned from example. Unfortunate.

But it's good J has made her decision. You're right, it would be worth sitting the girls down and working through their problems if she wanted to keep the friendship, but sounds like it's time to move on!

P.S. I judge her for driving an SUV, so there. ;)

I understand very well how it feels to be bullied, although not through the lens of a child (which makes your situation much harder). SM and I are going through a similar thing with a bully who is his tenant. Once we recognized her for what she was and started calling her bluffs, we took away a large measure of her power. Of course, we can't just break-up with her due to a contractual relationship. But we can refuse to allow her to ruin our evenings, stress us out or affect our health with her bile.

So, bravo on your handling of this awful situation. It's amazing how childish some adults can be, eh?
